The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology (www.hudsonalpha.org) is a non-profit organization with the mission of developing and applying scientific advances to health, agriculture, learning, and commercialization. We use the tools of genetics and genomics to make discoveries, improve life on the planet, stimulate economic development, and communicate the importance of science to the public. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's campus hosts 15 faculty investigators carrying out cutting edge genomics research, laboratories for educational outreach programs, more than 40 associate companies whose efforts build on and intersect with HudsonAlpha faculty, a genome sequencing center, and a major conference center.
Huntsville/Madison County is home to the birthplace of NASA's entry into the Space Race, is commonly referred to as "Rocket City", and remains a national center for space science and exploration. Biotechnology, computing, telecommunications, diversified manufacturing and a variety of emerging specialties provide growing economic opportunities in delightful surroundings. The area enjoys a favorable cost of living and quality of life. Mountains, lakes, woodlands and the Tennessee River accommodate numerous recreational activities. A temperate climate enhances the season for outdoor sports, including world-class golf, hiking, biking, and fishing. Major concerts, Broadway and symphony performances, extensive permanent collections and traveling exhibitions contribute to a wonderful way of life.
HudsonAlpha's Center for Plant Genomics and Sustainable Agriculture supports research programs that seek to reduce the land use impacts of food, fiber, and fuel production by adapting crops to our world's changing environment. The Center generates genomic and phenotyping data, provides a computational backbone for analysis, and accelerates crop improvement through outreach activities. Our faculty have extensive experience in plant genomics, have contributed to a majority of plant genome reference sequences available today, and are some of the highest cited researchers in the field. Collaborations with public and private institutions are the platform from which we seek to understand and solve current and foreseeable problems in plant breeding and agriculture. HudsonAlpha is dedicated to the Center's mission and supports its growth through the positions advertised here and other institutional resources.
HudsonAlpha is accepting applications for faculty investigators who will help carry out the mission of the HudsonAlpha Center for Plant Genomics and Sustainable Agriculture through independent, substantially externally funded, and nationally recognized research programs. Faculty investigators are the principal scientist and head of the laboratory, overseeing all aspects of the laboratory's research mission. Preference will be given to those applicants whose research complements and expands existing programs in the Center. We are specifically interested in individuals whose current research is directed at the following areas:
applying genomics to plant breeding and crop improvement
automated plant phenotyping with a focus on data analysis and feature extraction
